Steve Cook has spent his life serving the people of South Carolina. A lifelong South Carolinian,
he was born and raised in Orangeburg, where he learned the value of hard work, integrity, and
education from his father, a high school principal. Those lessons continue to shape the way he
represents every client

After serving as Student Body President in high school, Steve attended the University of South Carolina, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. While at USC, he worked as a student athletic trainer for the Gamecock football team, gaining firsthand experience with the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of serious injuries. That experience, combined with his own recovery after being seriously injured in an automobile accident while attending law school, gave Steve a unique understanding of the physical, emotional, and financial challenges injury victims face.

Steve earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1985 and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar that same year. He began his legal career with John Koon, P.A., where he focused on workers’ compensation and personal injury law. Today, as a founding partner of Koon Cook & Walters, Steve continues a career spanning more than four decades, devoted to helping injured South Carolinians obtain the justice and compensation they deserve.

Over the years, Steve has earned a reputation as a skilled trial and appellate advocate who is prepared to fight for his clients at every stage of the legal process. He has successfully argued appeals before the South Carolina Supreme Court, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Steve is also recognized as a respected educator within the legal community. He has taught seminars for attorneys on preparing and trying automobile accident cases, addressing complex medical issues in personal injury litigation, and handling workers’ compensation claims. In addition, he has spoken to coaches, athletic directors, school administrators, and community organizations on risk management and legal responsibilities
Outside the office, Steve has remained deeply committed to serving his community. He has officiated high school and church league basketball for more than 45 years and has served on the Richland County Board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A devoted Gamecock, Steve enjoys supporting University of South Carolina athletics and is a longtime member of both the Garnet Society and the Gamecock Club.
For Steve, practicing law is about more than resolving claims—it’s about helping people rebuild their lives after unexpected injuries. Having experienced the recovery process himself, he understands what clients are going through and is committed to providing compassionate guidance, straightforward advice, and determined advocacy every step of the way.
